The American Silver Eagle Dollar coins are the official silver bullion coins of the United States. The American Silver Eagle Dollar was first released by the United States Mint on November 24, 1986. American Silver Eagle Dollars are struck only in the 1 troy oz denomination which has a nominal face value of one Silver dollar coins and is guaranteed to contain one troy ounce of .999 pure silver.
American Silver Eagle Dollar coins are authorized by the United States Congress with the silver weight and content is certified by the United States Mint. The American Silver Dollar Eagle bullion coins may be used as an investment. The United States Mint also produces a proof version for coin collectors.
The Silver Eagle Dollar has been produced at three mints. The Philadelphia mint, which uses a p mintmark and the San Francisco mint issued proofs that have an s mintmark. In recent years Silver Eagle Dollar proofs are from the mint at West Point, New York which have a w on the reverse.
When the United States Mint began striking American Eagle silver bullion coins in 1986 the value of these coins was intended to be tied directly to their metal value. A strong collectors market has developed where mintages were low. American Eagle silver bullion coins are available in Uncirculated and Proof versions, as well as in a number of different sets.
