The U.S. Mint started offering proof coins during the modern era, in 1936. The mint sets produced during 1942 came with either one nickel or the set could be purchased with both types of nickel (regular and wartime). Proof set sales were suspended in 1943 and did not resume until 1950. Proof sets were not produced during 1965, 1966, and 1967, at which time special Mint Sets were made. These U.S. Mint Coin Sets are a standard of coin collecting.

A new series of $1 coins honoring the Presidents of the United States began in February 2007. The United States Mint is striking and issuing a set of four Presidential $1 Coins per year in proof condition. Images of the first four presidents, Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Madison, appear on the obverse of the first set in 2007. Each coin has a reverse design of the Statue of Liberty. The size, weight and metal composition of the Presidential $1 Coins are the same as the Sacagawea Golden Dollar.
