The Treasury had about 2.9 million Morgans left in 1964, very scarce Carson City specimens, which the GSA put up for public sale via mail-bid auctions starting in 1972. By 1980, as the supplies dwindled, the public finally became interested in the beautiful Morgan silver Dollar. The real feeding frenzy came, however, when an amazing hoard of more than 400,000 Morgans was found in the basement of Nevada miser LaVere Redfield after his death in 1975. |
Thi is a 1883 cc Morgan Silver Dollar, Mint is very scarce in Uncirculated and Prooflike conditions, but is surprisingly scarce as a Deep Mirror Prooflike. Because of the general high quality of the coins produced at San Francisco, it is easy to find well struck, bright, and attractive examples. The most scarce Uncirculated grades is MS, followed by MS 65, then MS 66; even MS 67 examples are readily obtainable.
The Morgan
Silver Dollar finest examples graded by PCGS are MS 68's, MS 67's Prooflikes, and MS 66's Deep Mirror Prooflikes. Caches of Morgan Dollars produced at the Carson City Mint were discovered and were sold to coin collectors by the federal government in the early 1970s. These Silver dollars were uncirculated and are called GSAs (named after the General Services Administration) The GSA packaged each coin in its own holder and the coins were sold via mail bid.
